NTU Faculty Member Represents Iraq at International Mediation Workshop in Cyprus

Assistant Professor Dr. Omar Hazim Mohammed, a faculty member in the Department of Autotronics Engineering Technologies at Mosul Polytechnic College, represented Northern Technical University at an international training workshop titled “Mediation Skills: Leadership, Empathy & Strategic Negotiation.”

The workshop took place in Nicosia, Cyprus, from September 21 to 23, 2026, and brought together academics and specialists in leadership, mediation, and negotiation.

It was organized by Cyprus’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), and in partnership with the Professional Mediation Center at Saint Joseph University of Beirut. The program was designed to build specialized skills in mediation, conflict management, and negotiation.

The sessions covered a range of advanced topics, including leadership and conflict management, mediation, effective communication, emotional intelligence, tactical empathy, deep listening, reframing language, and strategic negotiation. A central theme was the “Mediator-Leader,” someone who handles different situations through influence, facilitation, and neutrality.

The program also included hands-on activities and role-play simulations based on real situations in academic settings, such as handling disputes, complaints, and highly charged encounters. Participants practiced turning negative language into constructive wording, and learned to look at the real interests and needs of each party rather than only their stated positions.

Participants were also introduced to the Harvard negotiation model and how to apply its principles to reach solutions that serve everyone’s interests and produce lasting agreements. The program further helped develop skills in multi-party mediation and negotiation.

The experience strengthened participants’ professional skills in leadership, communication, mediation, and negotiation, and will allow them to bring what they learned back to their universities and apply it to academic and administrative situations.

Dr. Omar Hazim Mohammed’s participation reflects the university’s commitment to strengthening its academic presence in international forums, programs, and workshops. It also reflects its encouragement of faculty to engage with global experience, which helps develop academic and professional capabilities and widens opportunities for international cooperation and scholarly exchange.
